Together We Thrive Mentorship Program
The Together We Thrive (TWT) Mentorship Program was established at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) to provide structured, relationship-centered support for medical students, particularly those from historically, educationally, academically and economically underrepresented in medicine. The program grew from an identified need for stronger mentorship, belonging, academic guidance and community connection during the transition into medical school.
TWT was founded on the understanding that success in medical school requires more than academic ability. Students also benefit from trusted relationships, access to institutional knowledge, encouragement during challenging periods and mentors who understand the academic, professional, social and emotional demands of medical education. The program's guiding philosophy, Together We Thrive, reflects its commitment to supporting students not only as learners, but also as developing physicians and future leaders.
Together We Thrive Triad Model
A support network designed for every stage of the student journey.
First-year medical students are connected with a team of mentors who provide guidance throughout medical school. Each mentor plays a unique role in helping students navigate challenges, celebrate milestones and receive mentorship in their medical education and careers.
How the Model Works
Every mentee-scholar in Together We Thrive is paired with three mentors:
- Near-Peer Mentor: A current third- or fourth-year MSUCOM student who offers practical advice and firsthand insights into succeeding in medical school.
- Alumni Mentor: A graduate who shares career experiences, professional guidance and perspectives on life after medical school.
- Faculty Mentor: A current MSUCOM faculty member who provides academic mentorship and professional development.
Together, these three mentors create a well-rounded support system that evolves with each student throughout their medical school experience.
