The Walter F. Patenge Medal of Public Service award is the highest honor given by the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. It is named for Walter F. Patenge, the first president of the Michigan Osteopathic Medicine Advisory Board, and is awarded in recognition of lifelong devotion to patient care, service to the community, leadership within the osteopathic profession and excellence in the classroom and clinic.

The selection committee will have considerable latitude in interpretation. The award is not restricted to young or beginning faculty. It is intended that basic scientist candidates will be clearly identified with the college. The award will not necessarily be granted annually, but when regarded as warranted.
