Student Handbook - Facilities, Safety and Security

Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with safety and security information at their preclerkship site and base hospital for clerkship. Site-specific information for the East Lansing, Detroit Medical Center, and Macomb University Center sites may be found in the section below.

East Lansing campus 

• MSU Alerts provides “timely warning” and emergency notification messages. These messages are intended to warn the community about certain crimes and notify it of potentially dangerous situations on or near campus. These messages inform community members about incidents that may pose an ongoing threat and provide information to promote safety and prevent similar crimes.
• Safe MSU App is another way to receive MSU Alert notifications The app can be downloaded for free through the Apple Store and Google Play.   
• Ingham County Alerts (Cithttps://911.ingham.org/health_and_safety/911/capital_area_ingham_county_alerts.phpy of Lansing, City of East Lansing, Meridian Township, Delhi Township) community alerts in surrounding areas

Macomb University Center campus

• Register for campus alerts from Macomb Community College. Please note that closure announcements for MCC do not necessarily apply to the MSUCOM-MUC site.  

Detroit Medical Center campus

• Register for campus alerts from Wayne State University by texting WAYNESTATEALERT to 77295. Visit the website for more information. Please note that closure announcements for WSU do not necessarily apply to the MSUCOM-DMC site.

Information about campus security and crimes on campus is maintained and reported by the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. Students are required to complete training on bloodborne pathogens (BBP). The module may be found on the MSU Ability training system.

Instructions:

1. Click “Ability LOGIN” on the left side of the page under the Training heading.
2. Sign in with MSU NetID and password.
3. Click the “My Requirements” tab at the top of the page.
4. Complete the training titled Bloodborne Pathogen Awareness (EHSB-0000A-SCO).

If the BBP course is not listed in “My Training,” self-register for the course by the following steps:

1. Click the “Extra Courses” tab.
2. Select “Catalog Search.”
3. In the search box, enter “Bloodborne.”
4. Several options will populate; select “Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness.”
5. Confirm the Course ID: EHSB-0000A-SCO.
6. Click Launch, and complete the training.

MSUCOM students who are on clinical experiences as part of the preclerkship or clerkship requirements will be expected to utilize appropriate clinical precautions and abide by applicable policies and procedures of the college and the clinical training site. More information is also available on the University Physician website. In the event of an exposure, students are to complete a “Health Professions Students Exposure Report for Tuberculosis, Blood Borne Pathogens and Zoonotic Disease.”

1. Students will complete bloodborne pathogen (BBP) training. This will be tracked as a compliancy through the Office of Enrollment and Records.
2. Students will participate in orientation programs offered by their clerkship site and will complete any required training and/or employee health and/or infection prevention protocols required by the site.
3. Students will utilize universal precautions in all clinical settings. Students will use appropriate personal protective equipment and will abide by specific isolation or other precautions in place for specific patients and/or units in clinical settings.

1. Immediately wash the area with soap and water.
2. If a sharps injury/needlestick occurs in a clinical teaching site, follow the local protocol for immediate evaluation and notify the student coordinator at the site.
3. If a sharps injury/needlestick occurs in an ambulatory or other setting in which a protocol is not available, the student should go to the nearest emergency room without delay.

1. If a splash or fluid exposure occurs to the mouth, nose, mucous membranes, and/or non-intact skin, immediately rinse the area with water.
2. If a splash or fluid exposure occurs to the eyes, immediately irrigate the eyes with clean water, saline, or sterile irrigates.
3. Follow the local protocol for immediate evaluation and notify the student coordinator at the site.

1. If a student is exposed to a patient who is known to have or is subsequently diagnosed with a respiratory pathogen, including tuberculosis, they should contact the site coordinator for information and instructions for evaluation.
2. Students are expected to use appropriate procedures for respiratory isolation or precautions as posted. Students may need to have updated mask fit testing if the clinical site protocols require.
