Diversity, Inclusion and Safety

The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to a safe environment to support, promote and enhance inclusion and diversity in every aspect of its mission. 

We believe in the university’s core values of quality, inclusivity and connectivity. We embrace and respect differences in all people regardless of race, color, gender, gender identity, religion, national origin, political persuasion, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, height, weight, veteran status, age or familial status.

We also believe that a safe environment is one that strives to be humble, kind and respectful, and confident enough to know that truly listening to differences means putting aside preconceived judgements or biases. To trumpet, and then follow, these tenets will not only expand the voices and deepen the perspectives we want heard in our college but will enlighten our capacity to be a truly world-class medical school. 

We agree as a college that the presence of gender and ethnic diversity in the osteopathic medical education system, and ultimately the osteopathic health profession, will translate into improved health outcomes for all those impacted by our profession’s efforts in clinical care, outreach and scholarly activity.

As a premier osteopathic medical school, we have been, and continue to be, a leader in these most important endeavors and are constantly striving to meet these important goals.

In this section, you will learn more about our current initiatives that focus on the important issues of diversity, inclusion and promoting a welcoming environment to all. You will also learn about our Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and the people who we have entrusted to help us reach our goals, while also discovering the additional university resources that are available to students, faculty and staff.

While we can all be proud of these important resources, goals and strategies, we have much work to do. With recommendations by our Diversity and Inclusion Committee serving as a foundation, we agree that to achieve ALL of our goals necessitates that issues of inclusion, diversity and climate be part of the everyday conversation throughout the college. 

To do this, we will continue to expand and assess the structural, climatic and curricular dimensions of our numerous initiatives here in the college, so please check back for future updates.
