The COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that a continuing lack of primary care physicians limits the health and well-being of all Michigan residents, as noted in recent articles, such as “Michigan has a shortage of primary care doctors: What’s causing it,” by Kristen J. Shamus, March 21, 2023 in the Detroit Free Press, and another March 21, 2022 Free Press article, “Michigan facing shortage of primary care physicians, to get worse by 2030,” by Christina Hall. Can a medical profession and its medical schools help solve this problem? In my opinion, the answer is YES! To do so, however, takes commitment at all levels, and a professional dedication to this cause that must span decades.
