Academic Calendar
MSUCOM follows its own academic calendar, which is separate from MSU’s undergraduate and graduate calendars. Our students begin the academic year partway through the summer term.
The MSUCOM Registrar provides the core curriculum calendar for PreClerkship students (COM Year 1 and Year 2) below. A separate section for Clerkship students (Year 3 and Year 4) is located beneath the PreClerkship information. Further down the page, you’ll find a tentative academic calendar for the upcoming year, followed by Definitions & Guidance to help you interpret this page.

Student Action Items
Check & Clear Holds: each month; Holds prevent enrollment and you MUST be enrolled to have the medical liability coverage required of your rotations. Login at: student.msu.edu.
Enrollment Processed by COM Registrar:
- You should have at least 12 credits, or 8 weeks, of rotations scheduled 3-4 months prior to the next semester start date.
- Please remember you must communicate your rotation plans at least 30 days in advance of the start of the rotation to your clerkship resource specialist at com.clerkship@msu.edu. Requests under 30 days will be denied, including any change requests.
- Clerkship students will be enrolled in their rotations based on the semester that holds most of the days of that rotation. If equal number of days are held by both semesters, the enrollment will be processed in the later of the two semesters.
- If you should choose to take a personal leave or placed on academic extension, after your enrollment, bills, and financial aid are processed, your bills and financial aid will be impacted.
- Tuition Statements Available: each month you have enrollment adjustments; you will receive an email from the University with updated billing statements.
- Financial Aid Disbursement Begins: Aid typically begins to be disbursed 10 days before the semester start date or 10 days before your first course start date for the semester, whichever date is later. See Definitions & Guidance below for more information. Questions regarding your financial aid can be directed to: OFAMED@msu.edu.
Graduation Information
- MSU offers three separate conferral dates each year at the end of each spring, summer, and fall semester.
- All graduation requirements must be completed prior to the college determined deadline to remain eligible for that conferral date, this includes clearing all ET grades, COMLEX requirements, RECR requirements, and all other Clerkship Program requirements.
- The conferral date is the date that will appear on your transcript and diploma. The commencement ceremony is the day you walk across the stage.
- Holds on your account at the time of conferral will delay and/or prevent your diploma from being issued.
See Commencement page for more information.

Academic Calendar Definitions & Guidance
-
Academic Standing – Performance-based classification (e.g., good standing, probation) assigned each semester a student is enrolled in the DO curriculum; see policy page.
Academic Standing Review Dates – the Committee on Student Evaluation (COSE) meets after each semester of enrollment to assign an updated academic standing for each student based on the previous semester’s academic and professional progress. See COSE, Student Handbook, and policy for more information.
Academic Status – Current enrollment condition (e.g., active, leave of absence); see policy page.
Academic Year – Summer, Fall, and Spring in that order. Example: Summer 2025, Fall 2025, and Spring 2026 = Academic Year 2025–26.
Breaks & Holidays – Days most students have off. Your personal schedule may differ based on your progress through the curriculum and/or available preceptors to meet your curricular requirements.
Check & Clear Holds – Students should review their SIS account monthly. Holds prevent the COM Registrar Team from processing enrollment. Students will receive messages from the COMReg Team if a hold is blocking enrollment. Students are responsible for clearing holds promptly. Enrollment is required before participating in courses or clinical rotations because medical liability insurance is only provided with enrollment. Holds at the time of conferral will delay or prevent diploma issuance.
Clerkship – Allowed to cross semester dates; enrollment processed in the semester with most days. If equal, will be processed in the later semester where the grade is expected.
Clerkship Academic Calendar Information – Listed separately from PreClerkship because start and end dates depend on the student’s clinical rotation schedule. Year 3 courses are scheduled by the Clerkship Team; most Year 4 courses require the student to apply, be accepted, and schedule through Medtrics at least 30 days before the rotation start date.
COM Registrar – The College of Osteopathic Registrar and Team are responsible for maintain student permanent academic records and will policy interpretation and enforcement. Also known as COMReg and COMReg Team. See College of Osteopathic Medicine Registrar and subsequent pages for additional information.
Commencement – Graduation ceremony held in the Spring semester for COM; optional for DO students; see Commencement page.
Conferral Date – Official degree award date on transcript; used for licensure and employment verification.
Convocation – MSUCOM-specific ceremony for DO graduates; includes white coat presentation.
COSE – Committee on Student Evaluation provides Academic Standing along with making recommendations to the Dean regarding student progress. It is comprised of COM faculty. See the Student Handbook.
Enrollment Processed by COM Registrar – the COMReg Team is responsible for processing student enrollment each semester. Students are not to add or drop enrollment unless explicitly instructed.
Financial Aid Disbursement – Aid typically begins to be disbursed 10 days before the semester start date or 10 days before your first course start date for the semester, whichever date is later. Example: If the semester begins on January 5, 2026, but your first Clerkship rotation for the Spring semester does not start until February 2, 2026, your financial aid disbursement would begin to process 10 days prior to February 2, 2026. Questions about financial aid should be directed to the Medical Financial Aid Team @ OFAMED@msu.edu or visit: Office of Financial Aid - Medical Students.
Graduation Date – Date you walk across the stage, ceremonial only. Also known as Commencement Date; see Commencement page.
Groups/Pods – Assigned student cohorts for labs and clinical skills; posted in Medtrics or class-specific pages.
Incoming Students – Students who have applied and accepted a seat at MSUCOM but have not yet started coursework. They are completing requirements necessary for matriculation.
LARA – Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs; governs medical licensure in Michigan.
LARA Letters – Verification letters sent by COM Registrar to LARA confirming degree completion; required for limited license application.
Last Day of Contact vs. Last Day of Course – Course dates are Monday–Friday. Last day of course contact could be anytime in the last week of the course.
Last Requirement Due Date – All course requirements must be submitted by this date to receive a grade and have your degree conferred in the current semester. May graduates should complete requirements as soon as possible so the COM Registrar can submit LARA letters to the State, allowing a smoother transition to the next phase of your career. See Last Semester at MSUCOM.
Last Updated – Last time any information changed for that semester section. Annual updates occur each spring for the upcoming academic year.
Limited License – Temporary license for graduates entering residency in Michigan; requires LARA letter and conferral date. Also known as: Osteopathic Physician Educational Limited License.
Mandatory Sessions – Required in-person or virtual sessions (e.g., exams, labs); attendance tracked.
Medtrics Schedules – Official platform for course and rotation schedules; always verify dates in Medtrics.
RECR – Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research; University graduation requirement for all professional graduate students. These sessions develop a culture of responsible conduct and ethical awareness and fulfill in-person discussion hours required by federal funding agencies (e.g., NIH, NSF, USDA-NIFA). DO/PhD students complete RECR requirements with their DO cohort (M1 & M2) and complete PhD RECR requirements before conferring their graduate degree. RECR is a degree requirement for both programs. See The Graduate School – Research Integrity.
Registration and Enrollment Page – Link to official MSUCOM Registrar page for detailed instructions and information concerning visitor enrollment, course waivers, PreClerkship elective applications, licensure exam registration, and leave of absence information: MSUCOM Registration & Enrollment.
Semester Dates vs. Course Dates – The course dates may differ from the semester boundary dates, although in some cases they align. Course dates must be contained within the semester dates to maintain compliance with University and Federal guidelines.
Student Information System (SIS) - The University system that maintains students' official academic records. All academic progress must be fulfilled within SIS for degree conferral to occur. Bookmark this link: Student Information System (SIS).
Student Milestones – Key academic checkpoints (e.g., OSCEs, RECR, BLS, ACLS, Background Check, Urine Drug Screen); refer to Student Handbook for timeline, tracked in the SIS.
Tuition Statements Available – The date tuition statements become visible in SIS. Statements are typically processed once per semester unless enrollment changes or late fees accrue due to missed payment deadlines. Also known as Billing Statements. See Bill Pay FAQ for more information.
Tuition Payment Due Date – The date listed on the tuition statement for payment to be made before late fees and account holds are applied. Students may either pay the entire bill by the due date or enroll in monthly installments through the MSU Payment Plan. See Bill Pay FAQ for more information.
University Academic Calendar vs. MSUCOM Academic Calendar – Do not necessarily match; some coincidences exist. Follow MSUCOM Academic Calendar for the most relevant information for DO students as part of the graduate-professional schools within the greater University system.
University Breaks and/or Holidays – These are days the University considers breaks for the undergraduate population; they may or may not correspond to breaks in the DO curriculum.
